Lagos, Brazil—A new traffic jam in the city of Lagos is being used as a symbolic reminder of how the United States has failed to deliver the promised results of the 2016 election, a Trump administration official said Wednesday.
“It is a symbol of what happened to America and how the president, Donald Trump, is using this situation to try to create a false sense of security and hope for a future in which he is elected,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media about the traffic jam.
The traffic jam began on Monday, forcing thousands of people to seek shelter in the parking lots of a few hotels in the sprawling city of nearly 3 million people.
The official said that, during the traffic-jam, Trump made several attempts to blame Democrats for the problem.
“The president said, ‘We need to get rid of these Democrats,'” the official said.
“He said, I will get rid and replace them with the Democrats, but they will not get rid.
It’s like, this is a political stunt to try and create a sense of hope that he’s not going to get reelected.”
The official also said Trump made reference to a CNN report that claimed a major New York Democratic Party donor, George Soros, was behind the traffic delay.
Soros, who had donated $2 million to the Clinton campaign, has since denied having any role in the delay.
In a statement to The Washington Post, a Soros spokesperson said the organization is “disappointed and frustrated by the delay and that the President continues to use this issue as a diversionary tactic.”
“We look forward to working with President Trump to address the traffic congestion issues plaguing our country and we will continue to work with our partners on a comprehensive plan to address our nation’s infrastructure challenges,” the statement said.
