Traffic lights, traffic signs and other traffic signs are everywhere in Fresno County, but for those who want to get away with a DUI, the process can be tough.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Department says there are roughly 2,400 DUI arrest warrants across the state, but they’re not all for the same things.
So how do you get busted?
“Most of the time, it’s a case of, ‘If I’m in Fresno, do I have a felony DUI in my record?'” says Fresno County sheriff’s Sgt. David M. Broughton.
He adds, “We do try to keep people in jail, but we can’t keep them there for long.”
That’s where the traffic light changers come in.
They’re mobile, and can be seen throughout the county.
And they can change a light or light down.
They also can stop a car at a stoplight.
The deputies say they get calls from people who need to get to a DUI court and they don’t have the time to keep everything running.
But the deputies say the new enforcement programs help keep the county on the right side of the law.
They also say it gives them the ability to make arrests without a judge’s permission.
“It helps us get to the bottom of these crimes,” MBSgt.
