CLEVELAND – An SUV was hit by another SUV and rolled into a utility pole on the city’s west side.
Police say a car was travelling northbound on Broadway when it was struck by a Lexus SUV that was heading southbound.
The Lexus was heading west on Cleveland Avenue when it struck the SUV.
The driver of the Lexus, James B. Jones, 26, of Ohio, of Westlake, was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Jones is charged with failure to stop, failure to yield and driving without a valid license.
Brenton Davis, who lives on the west side of Cleveland near the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and the East Beltway, said he was at the intersection when he saw a man in a blue Chevrolet Camaro speeding eastbound.
He said he saw an SUV driving erratically and a pickup truck coming.
Davis said the SUV crashed into the pole.
“I thought it was a tree,” he said.
“I saw the SUV come right at me and I heard the crash and then I saw the light turn green.”
He said the man in the car got out and started yelling, “He’s trying to hurt us.”
Davis said he grabbed a cell phone to call 911.
“I just tried to do my best to protect myself,” he added.
“He hit me, and then he started to drive away.
I just thought he was a bad guy, and he hit me.
I don’t know what the problem was, but he hit a tree.”
The driver in the Camaro was not injured, police said.
Police said Jones was taken into custody without incident and that Jones is currently being questioned.
“We have some witnesses who saw the crash,” said Lt.
Brian DeLuca with the Cleveland Division of Criminal Investigation.
“The officers are looking into what happened.”
“We want to make sure we do everything we can to ensure that no one else is hurt,” said Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams.
“And we want to find out if anyone else was injured.”
Police have not released the identity of the driver in connection with the crash.
